Marie Gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition by Hisahiko Matsunaga.
Hisahiko Matsunaga researches the relations between
flat surfaces and three-dimensional shapes from a variety of
different angles.
He splits flat surfaces into pieces and then
reconstructs them as totally different three-dimensional shapes.
In order to corroborate an object's existence, he performs field tests to determine whether it is there or not.
He has also tried to recreate plane surfaces which involve three-dimensional shapes, such as still-lifes,
into new three-dimensional shapes.
This exhibition focuses on "the Shadow" as a proof of the objects' existence.
Unlike Cubism, Matsunaga's works change shape rather than show attachment to forms as seen on flat surfaces.
This does not mean that three dimensionality and two dimensionality are gathered into each other,
but rather the discrepancy between the two positions are inverted,
and then he creates objects we are conscious of again.
The title of this exhibition, "The Regeneration of Memories",is the continuation of Matsunaga's last exhibition, "Ghost",
which was held at Gallery Kozuka last October. Even if we realize a thing's existence in our daily lives,
we will gradually forget it when it is gone. However, when we remember there was such a thing,
its ghost will become visible. More than the memory of a realistic image, the ghost is a vague shadow.
Over time, the shadow calls back a memory of the object.
