Marie Gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition by Kozy Kameya.

Kozy Kameya paints modern Bijin-ga which, like Ukiyo-e, portray beautiful women and are informed by the concepts of "Beauty" and "Communication".

His choice of "Beauty" as one of the concepts used as the basis of his works is the result of seeing the Hiten, the airborne angels of Japanese Buddhism, when he was a child. Since then he has become passionate about human beauty. The creation of his works has led his inquiry into a beauty beyond human comprehension. Women are the main motif of his works. Before producing his works, he sketches female models, by which he aims to catch expressions of women's beauty. By combining each part as seen from different angles, he uses the composition to emphasize the neck, the eyes, and the ar

Pale white skin as Perfect skin for Japanese is an essential element for both angels and women. In order to highlight the skin, Kameya has developed his own special technique. Firstly, he paints on Japanese paper pasted onto wooden panels. Then, he attaches a wooden frame to the outside of the panel to build up the surrounding height above the picture plane. Kameya then stretches silk over this frame after which he adds more paint. This technique creates the impression of soft and transparent skin.

Another concept found in his work since his first solo show is the various forms of communication between people. We experience many scenes that we cannot avoid as we live our lives. These scenes are like the encounters and separations between ourselves and others, and also deliberations and decisions we make, not only the big turning points of life, and Kameya captures unusual momentary communication we are not ordinarily aware of. All of the new works in this exhibition take "gorgeous departures" as their theme.
