Hiroshi Matsuyama

Aug 24 - Sept 9, 2012

Thurs - Sat during the exhibition 1:00pm - 7:00pm

Marie Gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition by Hiroshi Matsuyama.

Hiroshi Matsuyama has set the basic theme of his entire work into the investigation of the relationship between the ground andthe figure. Early on in his career, he continued to create flat works in which color and form were important. Next he created images that had depth. In all of his works, it was important to compose the figure using his intuition. He caused a point of view that connected each point to keep the equilibrium between the ground and the figure. He created a space which guided the sight of the viewers.

In this exhibition, Matsuyama quantitively expresses the relationship between the ground and the figure by minimizing his reliance of his own senses and presents a sense of distance in the painting. After that, he unravels the meaning which is inferred by the apparent distance.

The current installation utilizes the whole exhibition space, including the wall, as a three dimensional ground. It is a piece that connects the two-dimensional to the three-dimensional with a straight line. Further, Matsuyama's new small works use the wooden panel as the supporting medium for the ground. Assuming that the panel is set up to the height of eye position on the wall, Matsuyama paints the figure at the place which is the center of the panel.
