Marie Gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition by Shoichi Seino.
Something that exists and the space it exists in accentuate each other.
One's reason for being is weakened it and the other one is missing.
It is no exaggeration to say that their existence depends on one another.
This is to say that......
if the one side is gone, the other one is also gone, and
if the one side appears, the other one also appears.
In Seino's kiln new things are created by using various materials and marrying them in
a passage through fire.
At the same time, previously existing matter is eliminated.
When using heat to make art uncontrollable phenomena happen.
Seino tries to coordinate events in order that an expected phenomenon can occur;
still, it extremely difficult to make things happen as he hopes.
The outcomes is determined by the position of the piece
in the kiln, by the way, the fire naturally burns and even by the weather.
Hence unforeseen results come about and this is one of the fascinations of Seino's work.
12.75-11=1.75 (kg)
The formula states that “the weight of graphite before the substance meets the fire” minus
“the weight of another firing” equals “the weight of the vapor”.
Seino has named his works using similar formulas since 2009.
“The wight before the fire and the substance meet” is the full weight of the graphite
which Seino uses, and “the weight after they meet” is the weight that is left in the kiln.
Finally, “the weight of the vapor” is “the weight of something that disappeared as burning
in the firing process”. When an object changes into something new, fire, the power of accident,
and also the disappearance of something are required.
However, it does not always that the weight of a thing what vanishes is the thing's exact determined.
This is due to the unpredictable nature of fire.
Continuing Seino's previous solo exhibition, this show is composed of new works made of
ceramic filters and graphite.
