Yoshihiko Nishikawa

Mar 22 - Apr 6, 2013

Thurs - Sat during the exhibition 1:00pm - 7:00pm

Marie Gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition by Yoshihiko Nishikawa.

By joining simple forms and lines, Yoshihiko Nishikawa creates sculptures as three-dimensional assemblage.

The starting point for Nishikawa's work can be found in uncomplicated forms such as circles, squares, and triangles. By connecting them with straight lines and curves, Nishikawa turns them into complicated figures, for, as he points out, the world is not only made up of perfect things. As various things gather and separate, they will harmonize.

Nishikawa mainly uses wood to make his work, sometimes connecting the wooden parts with magnets, because the quality of warmth and the image of continually growing branches and leaves overlap with his motivation to create the work. Furthermore, he leaves the original color of the wood unpainted to pose the question of what truth, genuine intention, and one's self really are.

The work is composed by juxtaposing everyday objects and also by reconstructing them in different forms from the original. At times even more forms are added. After that, only one single thing can be connected to another before it is able to expand freely forever.

Nishikawa says that this is very much like his own person.

The current exhibition comprises his newest works and other pieces extracted by playful spirits from abstract and concrete concepts.
