Marie Gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition by Hiroshi Kotani.

Light and shadow are established by their relationship to each other. In his previous work, Kotani painted shadows resulting from light emitted somewhere. The current exhibition comprises 11 of his newest works with the theme ‘HIKARI’, or natural light, and ‘AKARI’, or artificial light.

In keeping with the concept thus far, these works show the encoded images of memories and consciousness from some time in the past. An encoded image appears as a part of something in outline, like the light from the very dark screen of a TV that is switched on but is not tuned to a special channel. At the same time, Kotani transcribes and depicts on canvas fragments that remain in his memory.

However, in this new series, the atmosphere of the works seems bright, almost as if a light is emitted from the surface of each canvas. The motif in these paintings shows not only lines as "the passage of time" and points as "the present time", but also the outlines of things more concretely.
