Marie Gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition by Kozy Kameya.
In this solo exhibition, Kozy Kameya presents his new series called "Itadakimasu".
All Japanese people learn to say "Itadakimasu", "Let's eat” in Japanese, before every meal.
Behind the words, there is an expression of gratitude to the animals and plants that humans eat as the foodstuff of survival. This is one of the tenets in Buddhism.
Except that eating happens really naturally. Because not eating leads to death.
And by eating, every person confronts life.
This exhibition is made up of 6 of Kameya’s new works.
Two of the works, which stem from the “Transformable” series, compose an aggregate of smaller works, forming a honeycomb structure.
This structure can be connected indefinitely to other works with the same shape.
Furthermore, Kameya took inspiration from the zoetrope, the origin of animation, and here he presents a cycle of life continuing eternally like a connection of regular hexagons.
The figures in Kameya's previous works are not human, but rather what he calls "Tennyo", meaning “heavenly maiden” in Japanese.
However, in the "Itadakimasu" series, the subjects are human, and Kameya created the works from a human’s point of view.
