Marie Gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition by Hiroshi Matsuyama.
The issue of the relationship between the ground and the figure is similar to the question of which came first, the chicken or the egg. The ground and the figure change depending on what is recognized as the main focus of an art work. Thus, the part observed closely and the other parts around it form new relationships.
In his previous works, on the one hand, Matsuyama tried to leave his mark on the figure. He had a high regard for the conditions required to mix colors and their naturally resulting shapes. In this exhibition, on the other hand, he extracted the relationship specifically to paint on a canvas as the ground. To the best of his ability, Matsuyama simplifies the ground and the figure by creating the work without his mark.
The current exhibition is made up of 16 large and small canvases. In the new works, there are some that are arranged so that two or more grounds are visible on a single canvas. Moreover, if the exhibition space is seen as the ground, the canvases can become the figure.
